Elizabeth Birkshire Brothers Sherman, age 91, of Little Rock, Arkansas, died on July 21. She was a longtime active member of the Central Arkansas AGO chapter and served as Dean from 1970-72. She was organist at various churches in Little Rock, including Pulaski Heights Presbyterian Church and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Sherman is survived by two sons, a sister, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
These magnificent music machines are a valuable historic resource in the Keweenaw. They reflect the boom days of the copper mining era when people of wealth who lived in the area sought the best music for their churches and arranged for the purchase of these instruments. We hope this catalog will trigger interest in the organs of the Keweenaw from the local folk as well as travelers to this unique place.
This year’s conference, directed by Keith Shafer, immediately followed the national AGO convention just up the road in Nashville. What a fine experience it was for those fortunate to attend both, with their wide range of performances and learning opportunities.
A large 1870 E. & G. G. Hook organ, previously in Woburn, Massachusetts, has been moved to Holy Cross Church, Berlin, Germany,where it will be dedicated in concert by Thomas Murray on Sunday, October 21,2001. Professor Murray of Yale University has recorded several Hook organs.
