Buzard Pipe Organ Builders Opus 48

Buzard Pipe Organ Builders Opus 48

Buzard Pipe Organ Builders has completed a new organ, their Opus 48, for Saint George’s Episcopal Church, Nashville, Tennessee: four manuals, 55 stops, 65 ranks.  When all preparations are ultimately installed (including a 9-rank Antiphonal division) the instrument will have 65 stops and 73 ranks.

Nearly all of the organ is under expression, including the full-length wood 32′ Pedal Contra Trombone and 16′ Pedal Ophicleide extension of the Solo Tuba Mirabilis. The Great chorus, consisting of First and Second Open Diapasons and corresponding upperwork, is unenclosed.

The new organ’s cases are made from solid walnut, stained and finished to match the church’s existing woodworking. The round towers and flats are filled with the largest pipes of the 16′ Diapasons, the 16′ Dulciana, and the 8′ manual and pedal Open Diapasons, all made of polished tin. The pipe shades are made of basswood enameled in “Prayer Book Red,” pierced with stylized and gold-leafed St. George crosses.

The new organ is the final component of a comprehensive visual and acoustical renovation of the primary worship space, which was the capstone of a multi-million-dollar general construction project to serve their growing congregation.

The instrument was first used in worship on Christmas Eve 2022 and first heard in public at a hymn festival led by Robert McCormick on January 27, 2023. The final dedicatory event featuring the Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra was presented on May 9.
