Gail Archer Ukrainian benefit concert

Gail Archer, Chernivtsi

Gail Archer will perform a Ukrainian benefit concert at St. Paul's Chapel, Columbia University on Thursday, April 28, at 6 p.m.

Entitled "Chernivtsi: A Concert for Ukraine, " the program will feature the selections from her recent CD, Chernivtsi: Contemporary Ukrainian Organ Music (TBR 08.07.20, Meyer Media). The concert is free and open to the public—all donations will go to Ukrainian relief.

The program includes rarely performed works by six 19th–21st century Ukrainian composers: Fanfare, by Bohdan Kotyuk (b. 1951); Benedictus: Song of Zachariah, by Bohdan Kotyuk; Piece in Five Movements, by Tadeusz Machl (1922–2003); Fantasia, by Victor Goncharenko (b. 1959); Passacaglia, by Mykola  Kolessa (1903–2006); Chacona, by Svitlana Ostrova (b. 1961); and Fantasie, by Iwan  Kryschanowskij (1867–1924).

Archer has had a long-time interest in the culture of Ukraine. Since 2011, Archer has performed each year in Eastern Europe resulting in her election as a faculty member at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute. The new CD was recorded in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, on a fine Riegger-Kloss organ in the city’s Armenian Catholic Church.

Gail Archer is the founder of Musforum, www.musforum.org, an international network for women organists to promote and affirm their work. She is a college organist at Vassar College, a faculty member of Harriman Institute of Columbia University, and director of the music program at Barnard College, Columbia University, where she conducts the Barnard-Columbia Chorus and Chamber Singers.

Free. Donations are encouraged. Vaccinations are required. For more info, visit https://religiouslife.columbia.edu/sacred-music.
