Nicholas Schmelter has been appointed director of music at Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lapeer, Michigan. He will play the 1905 Hinners organ, develop the parish’s choirs, and administer other musical matters.
From 2011–15, Schmelter led the music program at First Congregational Church in Saginaw, where he supervised several choirs, administered a musical arts series, performed recitals, commissioned several compositions, and spearheaded the congregation’s organ campaign.
He received a bachelor and master of music degree from Central Michigan University, studying organ with Dr. Steven Egler. Schmelter is an organ recitalist and accompanist, a musical coach, an adjunct instructor at Saginaw Valley State University, and dean of the Saginaw Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
