Wichita State University organ program

Marcussen & Søn organ, Wiedemann Hall, Wichita State University

Wichita State University organ program is featured on the cover of the November 2022 issue of The Diapason. https://www.thediapason.com/content/cover-feature-wichita-state-university

Lynne Davis is Robert L. Town Distinguished Professor of Organ.

The feature article relates the genesis and history of the Marcussen & Søn organ in Wiedemann Hall. Wiedemann Hall was completed in the spring of 1986. It took five workers from the Marcussen firm seven weeks in 1986 to install the organ; ten more weeks were required for the voicing, which was directed by Olav S. Oussoren and his assistant, Emil Bladt.

The University presents two main recital series, the Rie Bloomfield Organ Series and Wednesdays in Wiedemann.

The School of Music offers core courses in applied organ, organ literature and design, organ pedagogy, keyboard skills are offered for bachelor’s and master’s degrees in performance (keyboard/organ) and music education (keyboard/organ emphasis). A Performer’s Certificate is also offered, which is an ideal way of taking a year following a bachelors’ degree, before or after a master’s, or just as a way of further developing one’s performance skills. Additionally, graduate staff assistant positions are available, offering the possibility of accompanying the major choirs at the school both on the piano and on the organ.

From May 21–25, 2023, a special opportunity for advanced organists will take place: Masterclass on the Marcussen with Lynne Davis. Following the masterclass, a Pipe Organ Encounter (POE), sponsored by the Wichita chapter of the AGO, will take place from June 25–30, 2023.
