Dobson Opus 100 for Curtis Institute of Music

Rendering of Dobson Pipe Organ Builders Opus 100, Curtis Institute of Music

Dobson Pipe Organ Builders, Lake City, Iowa, is building a four-manual, 73-rank organ for the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dobson’s Opus 100 celebrates Curtis’s 100th anniversary and comes during the builder’s 50th anniversary year and is the first instrument to be built in the firm’s new workshop.

Alan Morrison, holder of the Haas Charitable Trust Chair in Organ Studies, directs the Curtis organ department and is the primary instructor for its five students; he is joined by Jeffrey Brillhart, who teaches improvisation.

The design of the new instrument for Field Concert Hall is a collaboration between Dobson and a committee of Curtis organ alumni. The new organ will occupy the same chambers as the previous instrument, though the arrangement of divisions will be different. In addition to a new four-manual console, a portable two-manual teaching console will be provided. Installation begins in 2025, with completion in 2026.
